Gudang Garam PT was founded in 1958 by the Wonowidjojo family, the Kediri-based company started off as a small-scale kretek cigarette producer with 50 employees in 1958. In 1966, Gudang Garam PT became the largest kretek company in Indonesia, and today it is the largest oublically listed kretek company employing nearly 50,000 workers. The company owns a tobacco complex that hosts the production of machine-manufactured kreteks and hand-rolled kreteks. By 2004, Gudang Garam PT had three main distributors who distribute Gudang Garam products to 450,000 retail outlets, agents and sub-agents in Indonesia.
