Plantings up 10% for Mexico

The burley crop in Mexico has experienced considerable variation in the reception it encountered on the world market over the years. But the current global tobacco situation has worked to its advantage, and this season, the tobacco companies doing business in Mexico plan a 10% increase in plantings over 2007 and 2006. According to Universal Leaf's August World Summary, the overall Mexican burley crop in 2009 is forecast at 11.3mn kgs. "It is a neutral burley and not cheap," said one leaf dealer. "But in the current short burley market, it definitely has a place in world blends." As recently as 2006, Mexico produced 13mn kgs of burley, but it fell to 10mn kgs in 2007 and appears to have produced about that amount in 2008.
