Indonesia's cigarette leaf production is centred on flue and sun cured Virginia and the Burley leaf, which was introduced when Phillip Morris moved into the islands in 1997. While the crop size has been stable up to the end of 2007, leaf producers predict that there will be a visible decline this year as crops fall victim to the global disease of increases in fuel prices. According to GAPRI, the Union of Indonesian Cigarette Manufacture, 198.9bn sticks were sold in 2003 rising to 222.9bn sticks during 2007. Over recent years, flue-cured Virginia has been predominantly grown on Lombok Island in the West Nusa Tenggara province in south central Indonesia as areas that used to grow this crop in east and central Java have now switched to the sun-cured version of the crop.
