To meet European Commission approval of the takeover, Imperial Tobacco has sold fine cut brands Interval, Bergerac, Santoya and Wervicq (in France); Van Nelle (Italy and the Canary Islands); and Pica-dura (Spain) to Philip Morris International. In addition, PMI has also bought pipe tobacco brands Bergerac (in France) and Kilta (Finland) from the UK-based firm. Turnover at Altadis in 2007 was static compared with a year earlier at €12.5mn. Pre-tax profit slipped 0.9% to €744mn. Cigarettes grew 2% by volume to 120.7bn sticks and 3% by value to €1.7mn. EBITDA rose 19% to€621mn. The company reported strong performances in Spain, Morocco and the Middle East.
