Type 03 Chu-SAM

The Type 03 Chu-SAM is a Japanese development program for a medium-range air defense missile system to replace Japan's aging MIM-23 I-HAWK system. The program (originally called M-SAM) was slated to start in 1993, but was delayed a year for further evaluation. The current program entered engineering development in FY94, with operational testing beginning in 2001, initial procurement funding in 2003 and initial missile deliveries in 2004-05. The JGSDF funded 13 companies (squadrons) in the JFY05-16 budgets. The JGSDF started a Chu-SAM-Kai upgrade program in FY10 aimed at improving performance against cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles while at the same time, trying to decrease costs.
