Splitting and shaving of tanned leathers asks to be rationalised. In an industry where so much waste is generated and margins are tight, the loss of valuable raw material as shavings, as opposed to either higher substance splits, or larger splits of the same thickness, does not make sense. This is especially so as significant improvements through better engineering and control systems might, on consideration, give rise to these expectations. However, splitting machines continue to operate by splitting over substance, while shaving machines convert this surplus from a high value complex matrix into a low value waste.
