"An increasing volume of leather production and the demand for uniformity and repeatability has led to much development of spray application systems since the 1950s," writes Walter Landmann in his new book, The Machines in the Tannery. "Whilst these requirements were being met, fresh problems such as excessive consumption of the applied materials, overspray, bounce back and emissions to atmosphere arose and had to be addressed. As a result spraying machinery has increased in complexity as it is equipped with spray limiting devices, programming and control of application and emission abatement equipment. The spray gun traversing methods, which initially were of the reciprocating gun carriage type, progressed to the rotary system and both of these are in general use," he continues.
