Commission vice-president offers support to COTANCE

European leather industry leaders have told the European Commission that there is a need for better regulation of the use of the term leather and for better labelling of leather products. A meeting between the Commission vice-president for industry, Antonio Tajani, and a senior delegation from COTANCE, the body representing the leather industry in the European Union, took place in Brussels at the end of July. Led by COTANCE president, Rino Mastrotto, the industry representatives made it clear that there is an urgent need to protect the name of leather and to protect the industry and consumers from "deceptive practices" from manufacturers and sellers of synthetic substitute materials that misuse the term in their product names.
