The Japan Patent Office on September 3 opened a new web-based database service covering the intellectual property related laws, statistics, court rulings and other information of Asian nations. Atsuhiro Furuta, the officer responsible for developing the database, told BNA on September 6 that he believed that it was the first of its kind in the world. "As far as I am aware, the European Union and other developed countries have web-based information services regarding foreign applications for IP but which are not as comprehensive as what we are trying to develop."
