Novartis Unit Loses Battle at Chilean High Court to Patent Antibiotic Ear Drops

Chile's Supreme Court has thrown out an attempt by pharmaceutical company Alcon Universal Ltd., a unit of Novartis Inc., to patent its Ciprodex brand of antibiotic ear drops. In a Nov. 21 ruling, the court ruled that the patent application for a formula in suspensions useful for the treatment of infection and associated inflammation did not show enhancements beyond those which would have been obvious to any skilled person in that field.
