Palm Oil Goes Sustainable

Palm oil has overtaken soybean oil as the most widely produced vegetable oil in the world, as product applications using the ingredient continue to escalate. The current market for vegetable oils is estimated at 135 million tons, with palm oil making up 45 million tons of that, with double-digit growth for palm oil in the last decade. At least 5 million of the 6 million tons of palm oil being used in Europe is for food applications. Innova Market Insights tracked 4,180 new products using palm oil in 2009, which was the second highest positioning for an edible oil/fat behind sunflower oil (5,370). Growth was reported in almost every top application and country from 2008 to 2009.
