The recent Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) report on Carbohydrates and Health has put the spotlight back on sugar once again. The result is an intensified focus from the industry on the reduction and removal of sugar in various food and drink categories. The SACN report advises that individuals should get no more than 5% of their total daily energy intake from free sugars, which equates to approximately 25g of sugar per day for a woman (just over 6 teaspoons) and 30g of sugar per day for a man (7.5 teaspoons). The definition of "free sugars" does not include milk sugars (lactose) found naturally occurring in milk and sugars in cell walls, such as those in whole fruit.
