Today, nobody doubts that vitamins B1 can prevent beriberi or that vitamin C prevents scurvy. But scientific opinion about the use of vitamin supplements by millions of seemingly healthy people has never been more divided. Almost one in three people take a vitamin supplement every day, according to the UK Food Standards Authority, while 15 percent of us turn to high-dose supplements for a quick fix. Supplements are taken as a "health insurance" to boost energy, slow down the effects of aging and reduce the risk of chronic disease. In 2010, the US market for dietary supplements and vitamins was worth more than $28.1 billion and is expected to grow to $36.1 billion in 2017.
