To dig the north heading (3 km) of a railway tunnel 5.5 km long in Hong Kong, an innovative mucking system was used with a fixed conveyor, a mobile conveyor, crusher and steel apron feeder. The mobility of the system allows continuous mucking without re-handling and without a lorry, compatible with the construction of the concrete structures of the roof, the invert, and the separating shell respectively 400, 500 and 600 m behind the working face. Crushed materials carried by the conveyor to a stockpile located 200 m from the portal can be removed round the clock despite noise restrictions (45 dB(A) at night) and are reclaimed by a neighbouring installation for dumping or use on site in the tunnel's draining floor. As concerns geology, the tunnel goes successively through granite, volcanic tuffs and granodiorites whose resistance varies from 100 to 200 MPa and encounters two faults, including a major one in Hong Kong with a 400-m cover and about 50 m wide.
