摘要

Jose Piqueras and Vicent Sanz Rozalen's edited collection A Social History of Spanish Labour is the 11th offering from the series 'International Studies in Social History'. The volume brings together 14 separate pieces, all by Spanish authors, and offers an over-arching introduction written by the editors (who have also written a chapter each). The selection process for this collection comprised several criteria, though the most striking and beneficial stipulations are that: all the material included was published after 1990; chapters cover various geographical areas; authors use an analytical framework such as class formation, gender, or politics; and chapters tackle bread-and-butter industrial relations issues such as living standards (p. 11). Chapters within the collection cover a broad chronology ranging from the early 19th century to the 1970s (whilst the introduction gives a historiographical overview that brings us to the present). In addition to the broad chronology, a wide range of topics are considered including women and work, discipline in the work place, social and cultural habits of workers, and attempts by the Francoist state to establish 'vertical' trade unions.
