New Technology @ Work

New Technology @ Work examines the nature, setting and impact of technology on work, organization and management. In doing so the authors seek to overcome the weaknesses of contemporary debates that have tended to provide overly optimistic accounts emphasizing the democratizing and skill enhancing impact of technology, or pessimistic reports of its consequential destruction of jobs, increased surveillance and de-skilling effects. Through contending that technology, although powerful, has no independent causal powers, adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to their study, and assessing the political and economic forces that shape the development and diffusion of technology on both national and global levels, the authors provide a rigorous and authoritative study. They overcome much of the hyperbole characteristic of many accounts of technology and should be commended.
