BUDGET INCLUDES FUNDING FOR ARCTIC OPERATIONS AND INFRASTRUCTURE

The Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2010 includes a section called "Arctic Marine Shipping Assessment Implementation." The purpose of this section is "to ensure safe and secure maritime shipping in the Arctic including the availability of aids to navigation, vessel escorts, spill response capability, and maritime search and rescue in the Arctic."rnThe legislation would provide $5 million a year for seasonal operations in the Arctic from fiscal years 2011 to 2015 and $10 million annually for contracts and grants to implement the shipping assessment section for fiscal years 2012 through 2015.rnThe legislation also calls for a comparative cost-benefit analysis of rebuilding and/ or building new icebreakers.
