Mohair requires different techniques from other fibres. It is regarded as a difficult fibre to handle, both in spinning and weaving, requiring knowledge of the behaviour of the fibre and specialised machinery to make it manageable. However, the interest in mohair is continuing to grow, and is part of the move towards precious fibres and high-value fabrics, both notable features at this year's fabric and yarn shows. From Filo in Milan to Pitti Immagine Filati in Florence, fancy precious mohair yarns and super kid qualities made a statement in design and quality which captured this trend. Top quality mohair, with lustrous colour and soft texture, is a feature of designs for autumn/winter 2016/17, with reds, oranges, mustard, green and purple leading the way for fluffy or combed mohair yarns knitted with silk or Merino wool. Puffed-up yarns with volume imitate soft hair or fur, with flamme looks creating clouds of fibre, while superfine mohair gauze in wraparound knitted dresses or see-through tops vie with fluffy hand knits.
