The New Zealand wool industry has welcomed the launch of trade talks with the EU that could help the sector build on an already strong trading relationship. The negotiations were launched towards the end of last year by New Zealand's trade minister, Tim Groser, and EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom. Many industries will be watching the progress of these talks, and the wool industry is just one for whom Europe is an important market. New Zealand currently exports wool to 40 destinations around the world and, as at July 2015, 14 of those were European countries. Of the 118,046 clean tonnes of New Zealand wool exported in the first six months of 2015, 28,768 tonnes went to Europe, representing an average of 27% of the total clip exported.
