There is, in the world of classic boats, a tension between performance and appearance. One sees this in outboard motors, the sometimes-garish graphics of which conflict with period-sensitive ambitions. Aesthetic-minded owners and builders sometimes paint out their engine covers in a goes-with-anything tan buff, or some other color, in order to minimize the motor's presence; others have come up with fitted canvas covers for the same purpose.
