Now You See It, Now You Don't: Perfect long edge joints the first time

If you're working in a typical small shop, making long edge joints can be an interesting experience in trying to make a small jointer do much more than it can (or should). If you have access to a stationary jointer (the bigger, the better), the making of edge joints is more likely to go well, but the job is not without its frustrations. Depending on the tool, tuning up the jointer can require more fiddling than feels worthwhile when you only have a couple of pieces to do. If a curved joint is in your mind, a jointer simply is not your best partner; jointers are designed to make straight joints. And at some point, for really longjoints, any jointer is too small. Making edge joints by hand is a time-honored technique and works well, but you may not be feeling like sharpening up your hand tools and skills.
