Investigating Great Lakes shipwrecks and researching a bygone era are Pat Labadie's passions as historian at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, Michigan. In the late 1950s, esteemed maritime historian Howard Chapelle suggested that a career in a maritime museums would better serve Labadie's interests than "designing plastic boats" as a naval architect.
