The Abaco Influence

"The Bahamians have turned sailing old wooden workboats into an extreme sport." That's how Randall Peffer (Randy, to his friends) describes the now-decades-old sailing scene in the Abaco Islands and surrounds-a vibrant scene born out of once-diminishing maritime traditions in the islands. For a few spectacular days last winter, Randy sailed aboard ABACO RAGE, the sloop that appears on the cover of this issue. The boat is named for a ferocious sea state that can build up, in the right conditions, in the otherwise docile Sea of Abaco.
