Charlie Madsen's life was as colossal as the reputation of the great Kodiak bear he hunted, a species that came to symbolize his stature as the dean of Alaska's guides from the 1930s through the 1950s. Those decades marked the sport's heyday, and Kodiak Island became a destination for big-game trophy hunters. The first thing they saw after disembarking in Kodiak after a seven- to nine-day Alaska Steamship passage from Puget Sound was a Madsen company sign: "Welcome to Kodiak: Home of the World's Largest Bear."
