WESTWARD and the Way Forward

Down in the engineroom of the 86' motor vessel WESTWARD, Capt. Bill Bailey is oiling the engine. Methodically, he works his way forward from the aft end of the 110-hp, 1923, Atlas Imperial diesel with an oil can in hand. Drip cups are topped up and bearing points are touched with a drop of golden grease. The whole engine, painted a mossy green, glistens with a sheen of oil while it propels the 140-ton WESTWARD at a steady 8 knots from Orcas Island in Washington State's San Juan Islands south toward Port Townsend for the town's upcoming wooden boat festival.
