The world-renowned racer-cruiser enters its ninth decade

In 1936, a small committee at Melbourne，Australia's, Royal St. Kilda Yacht Club (now the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron) formed to select a new one-design class. They sought a boat that would be economical to build and able to cope with the often- challenging conditions of Port Philip Bay. Fairly late in the process, the Tumlare, a 27-footer of Swedish origin, came to the committees attention after the design was published in the British magazine Yachting World. The club's members were smitten, and made an 11th- hour decision to select this sleek sloop designed by Knud Reimers.
