This article explores the role of Trollope's emigration experiences in the development of her a??American novelsa??. It argues that Trollope was not merely rehashing the material of Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832) in her subsequent fictional writing, but was instead using the theme of failed migration to explore a variety of questions about the impact of transatlantic relationships in the nineteenth century.
