In our September cover story, "Apocalypse Not," Matt Ridley skewered our society's penchant for alarmist predictions of doom, whether over resource depletion, pollution, pandemics, Y2K bugs, killer bees, or-most recently-melting ice caps. Not surprisingly, readers were sharply divided. In Ridley's corner: Jeffery Irvin, author of This Is the End: The Coming Apocalypse, the Culture of Fear, and the Fate of American Society. On Wired.com he wrote, "This is a fine article, evidence that common sense, reason, and a measured appreciation for science and technology are the best prophylactic against apocalyptic thinking."
