Though the use of rope dates back to prehistoric times, the rope industry prob-ably started some five to six thousand years ago when the ancient Egyptians de-veloped special tools to make natural fibers into ropes. The wire rope industry, in contrast, is about 175 years old, beginning in Germany for mining operations there. The wire rope business has been the dominant one for some time and remains so, but one synthetic rope maker is poised to take advantage of the many various situations which promise much more involvement from their types of synthetic rope products. Samson has a history stretching all the way back to the late 1880s. Their early trademark of Samson prying open the jaws of a lion, was for natural fiber products, mostly twine and cords. It's the oldest active trademark in the U.S., according to Mike Greenwood, director of new business development at Samson.
