Traditional materials used as lifting or mooring lines in deepwater exploration and production include steel chain and wire. However these materials have limitations in deep water primarily due to their weight. For example, a very large winch system must be in place to hoist the steel, and smaller vessels may not support the weight of the steel wire let alone the winch required. Another matter is the power required to hoist the entire length of steel wire. The weight of the steel doubles winch power consumption at depths approximately greater than 6,560 ft (2,000 m). But note that this is an estimate, it may be more like 8,200 ft (2,500 m).
