Net zero target is a huge challenge, let's do our bit

When it released its updated pathways on achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the International Energy Agency (IEA) did not mince its words: we are faced with "a huge challenge", it said. If ever there was a time to focus minds, this is it. Debates on whether climate change even exists are a distant memory. World leaders are outbidding each other with ambitious targets to slash emissions. But doing so will require nothing short of a revolution. There is no ignoring what this means for the wind sector. Decarbonisation requires electrification. And clean electricity will come predominantly from renewable energy sources, solar and wind especially (p14). According to the IEA, the world needs to install about twice as much wind capacity annually, over the next few years, as was added in a very successful 2020. And from 2030 it will have to ramp up to nearly four times what was added last year.
