Surrey Beatty and Sons have established a reputation for the production of scientificnvolumes of the highest quality. These publications generally involve the proceedings ofnspecialized scientific conferences which provide an overview of a particular biological field.nThe volume under review, 'Wildlife Management: Crocodiles and Alligators', has in no wayndiminished this fine reputation and will in the future be regarded as a landmark publicationnin Australian applied biology.nOne might query the appropriateness of this last remark, but when we look at thenmanagement programmes for these magnificent animals, we find that they are inextricablynlinked to the crocodile products industry. These include both the lucrative skin trade andnthe tourist desiderata ranging from crocodile meat, skulls and grotesquely stuffed juveniles,nto the bizarre bag of crocodile excreta. The management of wild or captive crocodilenpopulations is applied biology in its simplest form.
