The water industry has seen the benefits of anaerobic digestion for years, and now the government plans to make greater use of this process as a renewable energy source (see page 3). The move by the government has been welcomed by Water UK, which says water companies will cooperate actively with other sectors to remove the barriers to anaerobic digestion. It's good to see the water sector doing its bit for the environment, and for the government to acknowledge that anaerobic digestion is an emerging technology outside the water treatment industry in the UK. But anaerobic digestion is not the only path for sewage.
