It is a common misconception that rainwater harvesting can be specified on a purely arbitrary basis.rnRainwater harvesting has become an established environmentally friendly and cost-effective technology over the past five years. But it still surprises me that large, multi-million-pound buildings - often designed by major consultancies - will request a rainwater harvesting system without any supporting information. They also appear to consider the sizing of a rainwater system to be of low importance.rnIt is also a common misconception that it is suitable to use a standard piece of equipment designed for a domestic house on commercial projects. The thinking is that all you need to do is increase the size of the storage. This is simply not the case.rnThe specification of an efficient and cost-effective rainwater harvesting system requires a set of precise calculations, much like sizing any other piece of mechanical equipment such as heating or air conditioning.
