WATER CONTAMINATION is a global problem, and in the European Union alone some 700 synthetic substances, 300 of them pesticides, have been detected in water for human consumption. These pesticides are some of the most refractory compounds and have long been suspected of causing diseases such as leukaemia. The European Union 1998 Drinking Water Directive specifies a limit of 0.1 pg/1 for individual pesticides with a maximum pesticide total of 0.5 jag/1. One pesticide that has increasingly been detected at levels above 0.1 ug/1 in UK potable water sources is metaldehyde.
