North-south delivery pipe plan proposed

As wet News went to press, details were emerging of United Utilities' (UU) proposed plan to build a pipe to bring water from northern England to the south. According to United Utilities, the proposed HS2 high-speed Birmingham to London rail project offers a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity to lay a water pipe alongside the rail line. UU chief executive, Steve Mogford, was expected to unveil plans of the proposed £2.6B scheme at a meeting with the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee on March 7. The idea is that the pipe could deliver up to 66 million gallons of water daily to the London area.
