Earlier this year, the Institute of Mechanical Engineers published its thought-provoking report Global Food-Waste Not, Want Not. It made for a sobering read. Globally, the world produces a staggering four billion tonnes of food every year of which an astonishing 30-50% ends up being wasted. The UK's performance has improved over the years but there is still some way to go. Research by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) reveals that about 7.2 million tonnes of food is still discarded each year. Inexcusably, over half - an estimated 4.4 million tonnes - is avoidable, with an estimated value of £12bn.
