For the past several months, I have focused my remarks in this column on values and the elements of leadership that I have found essential as a president of a community college, as mayor of Long Beach and as League president. Campaigning for re-election as mayor and preparing for the League's Annual conference to be held here in Long Beach in early October, I was reminded that our leadership Positions are not permanent. Others will follow us as mayors, council members, city managers, depart- Ment heads and as president of the League. Each of us can, however, leave a legacy in our comuni- Ties and in the League that ensures the very best for our communities now and in the future.
