A Guide to Understanding New Designations in AWS Filler Metal Classifications

For years, suppliers and users of construction materials have recognized the need for documents that specify required mechanical properties, chemical compositions and usability. Organizations such as AWS, ASTM and SAE have performed this service and have issued filler metal and base metal specifications for commercial and military use. This article is written to explain some of the newer designations being used as optional supplemental designators in the more commonly used steel filler metal specifications.
