Generic System for Designation of Welding Filler Metals

For the past twenty years, two commissions of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) have been actively engaged in developing proposed international standards for welding filler metals, i.e., covered electrodes, bare wires, flux cored wires and rods used in the arc welding processes. In 1984, the need for a logical designation system for use in each of the proposed specifications was addressed by a task group of Commission XII. During the past eight years, four documents were prepared on this subject (Refs. 1-4). They became the basis for proposed filler metal standards for submission to the International Standards Organization (ISO).
