Design, manufacture and build for smooth running large fan rotors

A recent lecture was given by Dennis King at Rolls-Royce in Derby/UK. Dennis started his lecture by saying that the next time you climb on an aeroplane in order to fly off to a foreign destination (Fig. 1), just take a moment to think about what is going to propel the aircraft along, in particular the large fan at the front of the engine and the various requirements that the fan assembly must fulfil. These include weight, aerodynamic performance, noise, cost, cyclic life, resistance to foreign object damage as well as delivering and maintaining a reasonable level of vibration.
