Stickles are a constant topic of conversation. Controlling temporary or permanent sticky-induced process disruptions and quality problems still continues to be one of the most important aspects of process optimisation in paper mills. The costs incurred are an additional burden on the paper industry which does not have an especially narrow profit margin to begin with. Generally speaking, the primary objective should be to minimise the sticky load in the stock by means of suitable preventive measures and only then to employ methods for fixing and masking stickles. This paper begins with a systematic overview of the causes that have led to a rise in sticky-induced problems in the last few years. The process-related options for sticky control will be summarised in schematic form. A chief concern of the paper industry has for many years been the development and use of recycling-oriented adhesives in paper processing that do not interfere with the reuse of the paper products. Questions that arise over and over again in this context relate to the definition of a "recycling-oriented" adhesive and the practice-oriented evaluation of the disruptive potential of adhesives. It was our intention to resolve these issues based on the results of current research on adhesives carried out on a laboratory and pilot scale.
