Driven by increasing demands concerning economy, ecology and quality, wet end chemistry helps to increasingly optimise the papermaking process. Chemical additives in the wet end contributed in the past and will continue to contribute to both the improvement of paper properties and the optimisation of process cycles. In future main growth factors in the wet end will be functional additives such as sizing agents and dry strength agents. Sellers of chemical additives have to offer a wide portfolio, sufficient capacity and a large number of services in order to be competitive both on a regional and a global scale. The process of consolidation in the paper industry therefore comes together with the reduction of the number of suppliers. Existing additives have to be continuously further developed according to the changing environment-such as different circulation conditions and new machine technologies and new legal requirements. The chemical industry has to raise considerable resources for research and development, application technology as well as for investments in order to be able to offer sufficient capacities. The future of chemical research for the paper industry will therefore only be guaranteed if paper industry and chemical industry will work together as partners.
