Have you ever looked out of the window of a plane as it descends lower and lower wondering when, and if, the ground will appear? If all you can see is clouds and fog, how is the plane's pilot going to find the runway? Despite what seems like a precarious situation, commercial, and some private, pilots routinely fly safely into clouds with the aid of instruments. A handful of different instrument approaches are currently available, but the most precise and preferred approach is the instrument landing system (ILS), which provides both vertical and horizontal guidance in low-cloud conditions, fog, rain, snow, haze, and other obscuring phenomena.
