An airfield installation for directing the landing of aircraft particularly under conditions of low-lying fog comprises a plurality of captive balloons indicating the outline of the airfield and the course to be followed by the aircraft. A number of balloons 12 coloured red and white and carrying 'red lights indicate the airfield perimeter, two further amber balloons 13, 14 carrying amber lights indicate the line of the runway and a plurality of further balloons 16 coloured green and white and carrying green lights are situated along a line parallel to the runway and at successive different heights thus indicating the desired angle of descent. One of the perimeter balloons 12a is manned and is in communication with the airfield control tower, to enable the position of the balloons to be directed from above the fog belt.
