The summer of 1955 was a scorcher. Weeks passed without rain in the Midwest and Northeast, leaving fields parched and wells dry. July 1955 was the hottest month on record in many mid-Atlantic cities, and much of the population suffered oppressively humid conditions without the benefits of air conditioning.
