A Stormy Year: The United States Weather Highlights of 2005

There is no disputing the most important United States weather event of 2005: Hurricane Katrina. Katrina became the deadliest hurricane to strike the United States since 1928 and the costliest storm on record. Other major weather events included Rita and Wilma, which also caused major damage to the Gulf Coast region, and powerful Pacific storms that prompted flooding and mammoth mountain snowfalls across southern California and the Southwest early in the year.
