Wind power can be manipulated to become a low-cost, steady source of electricity, Stanford University scientists said in a recently published study. The study, which appeared in the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, notes that wind is the fastest-growing electric energy source. However, because it is unreliable, it is not currently used to supply baseload electric power, which is the amount of steady power produced by power plants, regardless of electricity demand. Using a transmission grid to connect wind farms would reduce power fluctuations caused by wind variability and make wind a reliable source of baseload energy, the study said.
