The 27th named tropical cyclone of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was Hurricane Zeta.This storm attained strong Category 2 status with 110-mph sustained winds.The storm formed in the western Caribbean and moved northward, striking coastal Louisiana (near Cocodrie) on October 28. It then passed directly over New Orleans-the first storm since 1851 to do so. As in the case of Sally (September Highlight), the storm defied the National Hurricane Center's intensity estimate and became an overachiever.Despite moving over cooler waters off Louisiana and experiencing increasing wind shear (the increase in winds with altitude),the storm continued to intensify right up to landfall.Figurei shows a stunning visible image, from NOAA's GOES-16 satellite, of Zeta at the time of landfall.You'll instantly note that this storm was becoming embedded in something far larger-a massive cloud and wind system, created by a large dip in the jet stream,called a trough.Figure 1.
