Can you tell me a bit about how you becameinterested in meteorology?I grew up in Iowa City, Iowa, two hours from Des Moines. As with many meteorologists, I got my start early. When I was in eighth grade, I had an earth science class and at the beginning of the term, the teacher put a questionnaire to everyone in the class, and one of the questions was, is there a particular scientific field you're interested in? I'd never really thought about it before,but I thought I'd always been interested in weather. I always went to the window to watch thunderstorms. My teacher loaned me a VHS copy of a 1985 NOVA special on tornado chasing. And this was back when only university research teams chased tornadoes. It was the first time I realized you could be a professional weather scientist.
